This fall, Vulcan Park and Museum prepares teachers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Birmingham Campaign with Teaching 1963: Integrating Birmingham’s Civil Rights Legacy in the Social Studies Curriculum. This practical one-day symposium, led by experts in the fields of history and education, imparts K-12 teachers with a greater appreciation for the events that defined Birmingham in the 1960s, and provides practical methods for integrating Civil Rights history in the social studies curriculum.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

Building on the Legacy of 1963
As a child, Freeman Hrabowski and hundreds of other Birmingham children joined a groundswell of people challenging the city's strict code of segregation. Graduating from Hampton Institute at age 19 and earning the Ph.D from the University of Illinois at age 24, Dr. Hrabowski went on to gain world-wide acclaim in higher education. In this inspirational address, Dr. Hrabowski offers his eyewitness account of the 1963 Birmingham Campaign and challenges educators to pass on its legacy and lessons to future generations.
